The Five Mindfulness Trainings are a bodhisattva practice springing from love:

  1. Protect life
  2. Practice generosity and offer joy
  3. Respect the integrity of individuals, families and couples
  4. Speak mindfully and listen deeply with compassion
  5. Consume mindfully—refrain from alcohol, drugs and toxins
Practiced out of love, they generate the energy to protect yourself, your family and society.

Bodhicitta Bồ đề tâm—the mind of enlightenment and love—underlies all practice. Awakening nourishes love and love deepens mindfulness. Śīla (precepts) and niệm (mindfulness) are one and the same: practicing the Trainings is practicing mindfulness. Mindfulness gives rise to concentration (samādhi), which in turn brings insight (prajñā).

True love expresses itself through practice. The acrobat story illustrates that “by protecting yourself you protect those you love.” The proverb “Thương nhau xin nhớ lời nhau” (“if you love me, please remember what I tell you”) reminds us that taking good care of ourselves through the Trainings is the most concrete way to care for others. Living in a Sangha and bringing mindful love to every step, every meal and every task nourishes bodhicitta and safeguards both self and community.
