Recognition begins with mindfulness: simply knowing that a phenomenon is present, without judgment, without grasping or pushing away. For example: “Ah, anger is here,” or “I am breathing in,” are both pure, simple recognition.

The Four Establishments of Mindfulness according to the Satipatthana Sutta:

  1. Body: contemplating the body in the body, recognizing all bodily actions.
  2. Feelings: contemplating feelings in feelings, recognizing joy, sorrow, fear, anger…
  3. Mind: contemplating mind in mind, including the 51 mental formations (of which there are 8 primary consciousnesses).
  4. Objects of mind (Dhammas): contemplating phenomena in phenomena, that is, the objects of the mind.
Along with this is the guarding of the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) with the light of mindfulness.

Recognition is to transform the internal knots (samyojana – the knots of afflictions) and latent tendencies. Simply recognizing and smiling at your sadness, fear, craving… is the beginning of transformation, freeing yourself from the silent domination of these internal knots.
