Simple recognition begins with mindfulness, knowing that a phenomenon is present without judging, grasping, or rejecting it. For example: “Ah, anger is there.” Or when breathing in: “I am breathing in and I know that the in-breath is there.” This is the first work of mindfulness, called bare recognition (la reconnaissance pure et simple).

The Four Establishments of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta):

  1. Body (form)
  2. Feelings
  3. Mind (the 51 mental formations, including the 8 primary consciousnesses)
  4. Objects of mind (dharmas)
All phenomena of body–feelings–mind–objects of mind arising in the present moment are recognized through the six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind).

Internal formations (samyojana) are knots of suffering that have accumulated; latent tendencies (anusaya) are dormant potentials, all stored in the store consciousness (alaya-vijnana). Habit energies (vāsanā/conditioning) create karmic habits (Karmavāsanā) and the two kinds of grasping (grāhadvaya-vāsanā). Recognize and smile to your suffering in order to transform the internal formations; when the habit energies are no longer there, the fruit of transformation manifests (āśraya-parāvṛtti).
