The Interbeing Nature of the Six Pāramitās

Thầy relates how mindful consumption can protect ourselves, our loved ones, and society, emphasizing abstaining from alcohol and practicing the Five Mindfulness Trainings as a great gift. Thầy tells a story of how he was inspired by a drawing of the Buddha that he saw when he was a child, and of his encounter with the hermit and the well. He relates how mindfulness helps cultivate understanding, which leads to the transformation of suffering and the awakening of compassion in us. Thay highlights the Buddha’s teaching on the Six Pāramitās as a guide to mindful living that can transform our life. The Six Pāramitās: giving, understanding, meditation, the Mindfulness Trainings, inclusiveness, diligence—have the nature of interbeing. If you practice one deeply, you practice all six.

This is the fifth talk in a series of five given during the Pain, Love and Happiness retreat, in the year 1997. Thay offered this talk at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the United States.
