Mindfulness, Freedom & True Love
The mind is like a garden consisting of two levels:
- Store consciousness, the soil containing all seeds.
- Mind consciousness, the space where seeds manifest as plants.
Within the store consciousness are positive seeds such as joy, generosity, and friendship, alongside negative seeds like anger, jealousy, and despair. To maintain happiness, two things must be practiced: avoiding the planting of negative seeds and refraining from watering the negative seeds already present. When a negative seed manifests in the mind consciousness, it should not be fought but embraced with mindfulness, just as a mother holds a crying baby. This practice of recognizing and embracing suffering leads to relief and healing. We must also be mindful of what we consume, such as television programs, which can act as food that either poisons or nourishes our store consciousness.
True love is built upon the four brahma-viharas, beginning with maitri, which signifies friendliness, affection, and loving-kindness. Self-love is the essential foundation for loving others; to love another, one must first be a friend to oneself and accept one’s own nature. This requires knowing oneself—“Connais-toi toi-même”—through the five elements:
- Form
- Feelings
- Perceptions
- Mental formations
- Consciousness
By going back to the body and recognizing these elements, one can transform suffering into peace. True love preserves the integrity and liberty of the other person, as locking up the object of love, like sunshine or a breeze, causes it to die. In true love, there must be friendship and space, allowing the other person to remain fresh and solid.
