Mindfulness and Maitrī: Transforming Suffering into Joy for the Twenty-First Century
This title has been reviewed for accuracy.
Thầy enthusiastically prepares Plum Village, society, families, and individuals for the arrival of the twenty-first century, which he calls the Century of Love. He explains the importance of mindfulness and collective effort in fostering love, compassion, joy, and inclusiveness, as well as reconciliation and restoration in our relationships.
Thầy offers practices of mindful breathing, walking, and eating as ways to cultivate love and happiness within families and communities. He also emphasizes the importance of rest as a practice for healing both our bodies and our consciousness. He introduces the meditation:
“In, out, deep, slow, calm, ease, smile, release, present moment, wonderful moment.”
Thầy encourages us to establish weekly Days of Mindfulness, and Lazy Days, in our homes and communities—like those in Plum Village—in order to nurture qualities such as calmness, peace, and freshness. The interconnectedness of all beings (non-self), and recognizing the buddha-nature within oneself and others, are central themes of the talk.
This is the seventh of eighteen talks given during the Summer Opening, in the year 1996. Thầy offered this talk at the Upper Hamlet, Plum Village, France.
