"Mindfulness in Each Breath and Step"
Every day, sign a treaty with your staircase or your door: each step you take on the stairs or each time you open or close the door is an opportunity to practice conscious breathing, to keep your mind at ease. From this small act, you build your path of practice and can carry that mindfulness to Mount Wutai, or even further, to anywhere in the world.
At the same time, in the Sangha, it is important to make an “agreement” with your brothers and sisters: when there is doubt, fear, dissatisfaction, or anger, we come directly to each other to ask and resolve it as quickly as possible. The lesson from Venerable Shariputra also teaches us:
- to recognize that in a person who is not easy to love, there still remains a wholesome aspect, like a drop of water in a buffalo’s footprint
- to give rise to great compassion when encountering unkind actions or words, in order to help those who are suffering
- to use the “Discourse on Measuring and Reflecting” as a daily mirror, to wipe away unwholesome mental formations and to rejoice when we have been able to let go of them
Through this, we nurture our compassion, transform anger and jealousy, and live in harmony, freedom, and solidity in every moment of the present.
