Thay encourages children to see their parents in themselves, recognizing the continuity of life, like the grain of corn and the plant. This teaching helps children understand their connection to their parents and the importance of nurturing their roots. The talk continues on the Noble Eightfold Path, particularly right speech and deep listening. Deep listening allows others to express themselves, promoting compassion and understanding. He highlights that everyone has the seed of compassion and can benefit from listening deeply. Thay also talks about right diligence, explaining our mind’s two layers: store consciousness and mind consciousness. Diligence helps prevent negative seeds from arising and nurtures positive mental formations. Thay shares about the experiences of Israelis and Palestinians practicing together in Plum Village, learning to listen deeply to one another. He continues through the Noble Eightfold Path, discussing right livelihood and the four practices of right diligence: refraining from watering negative seeds, embracing negative seeds with mindfulness, inviting good seeds to come up, and allowing good seeds to stay a long time.
This is the fourth talk in a series of five given during the Awakening the Heart retreat in the year 2011. Thay offered this talk at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
