Orientation for the 6-day retreat 'Healing Ourselves, Healing the World'
September 24, 2013. 120-minute Dharma talk by Thich Nhat Hanh from Magnolia Grove Monastery in Batesville, Mississippi during the 2013 “Nourishing Great Togetherness” teaching tour. Orientation for the 6-day retreat “Healing Ourselves, Healing the World.”
Creating a healing environment in our physical and spiritual spaces; producing thoughts filled with understanding and compassion. Building a sangha or a practice center begins with looking at our own suffering, recognizing the suffering in others—the first and second Noble Truths—so the energy of compassion can arise.
The monks and nuns chant the name of Avalokitesvara to touch suffering and help relieve the pain of others; as we listen, we stop thinking and stay with our breathing (chant begins at 19:44). Talk resumes at 48:30 with practice orientation by Brother Phap Dung and Sister Dang Nghiem.
