Overseas Vietnamese 1
The Committee for Overseas Vietnamese respectfully welcomes Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh together with the monastics and lay friends from Plum Village to visit and share about the spiritual and cultural life of the Vietnamese community abroad. The program consists of two parts: a presentation by the Zen Master and a session for questions and answers on Buddhist studies and meditation practice. Before beginning, the Plum Village monastics chant the name of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva in Sanskrit, practicing to touch the energy of understanding, acceptance, and love inherent in every cell, radiating into a collective energy that soothes body and mind after just ten minutes.
The practice of mindfulness is illustrated through very concrete methods:
- Mindful breathing—inhaling and exhaling with awareness to dwell in the present moment
- Tea meditation: spending three minutes truly present while drinking tea
- Walking meditation: each step is solid, free, touching the wonders of life
- The sound of the Plum Village bell invites us to stop talking, stop listening, stop thinking, and return to our breath
From the story of Meursault in L’Étranger and Thúy Kiều visiting Kim Trọng, the Zen Master emphasizes that awakening (Budh means to wake up, Buddha is the awakened one) is the capacity to be fully present, to recognize the wonders of the present moment. Mindfulness not only heals personal suffering but also transforms habit energies, helping us to cherish “the twenty-four brand new hours of a new day” and to offer our loved ones the most precious gift—the freshness and sweetness of our presence. The Dharma in the West is not for proselytizing but is a path of insight, with the energy of mindfulness helping to transform suffering nonviolently, to build inner peace, and to create a happy community.
