Poetry of Peace
Sitting quietly on the night of Lunar New Year’s Eve becomes a precious gift offered to our parents, ancestors, and descendants, helping us to be “peaceful and deeply connected with the flow of time and of life.” When we sit quietly, not only ourselves but also our ancestors and the world experience peace and a reduction of suffering. In 1944, in Northern Vietnam, two million people died of hunger, causing the previous generation to be busy accumulating and storing; today, even though we have more abundance, people still do not have the opportunity to stop and sit quietly.
There is only one path, which is to practice with true ethics and true love so that we do not have to “wear a mask” in society—not in the Party, the government, or Buddhist affairs—and so that young people can maintain the bodhicitta they have begun. When we have true ethics and love, we can transform ourselves and society, healing the wounds caused by war, suspicion, and fear; only through deep practice can we open a way out for ourselves and for the community.
