Thay Nhat Hanh recounts his journey leaving Vietnam in 1966, initially intending to stay away for only three months, but then having to remain in the West for 39 years to campaign for peace, while also bringing the teachings of the Buddha to Western people through the practice of mindfulness in walking, standing, speaking, smiling, and eating. Thay shares:

  1. Because he understands both Buddhist culture and Western culture, Thay has written many best-selling books such as Living Buddha, Living Christ, Peace Is Every Step, Anger… helping millions of readers in Europe, America, Korea… learn how to transform suffering right in their daily lives.
  2. Through retreats attracting from 1,000 to 7,000 people in Europe, America, Korea…, young people, intellectuals, as well as police officers, businesspeople, veterans, officials… have found a Dharma door of practice that is gentle yet profound.

In parallel with his role as author and Dharma teacher, Thay introduces the Plum Village Sangha model, which now includes nearly 20 nationalities, operating on the principles of:

  • Renewing the teachings and methods of practice to suit the conditions of modern times.
  • Shining light on one another through the practice of Beginning Anew, offering constructive feedback, and writing “shining light letters” to help each member develop fully.
  • Building the sangha as a second family, sharing responsibility, love, and walking together “as a river”—every decision arising from the collective insight of the community of practice.
