This Q&A session took place on the evening of September 25, 2002, during a retreat for monastics, part of Thay’s teaching tour in the United States.

  1. In the context of the current machinery of practice organization causing the aspiration to transcend the world to be sidetracked into rituals, and the situation of a divided church, could Thay please outline a direction to build an organization and a correct path for monastics and lay practitioners?
  2. Given the reality that young monastics upon graduation are swept into the machinery of rituals or become absorbed in external studies while neglecting the practice, could Thay offer a direction to resolve the conflict between studying, doing Buddha work, and the need for true practice?
  3. How can one resolve the feeling of confusion when seeing that shouldering Buddha work, legal constraints, and the expectations of lay practitioners cause one to lose their practice, while secular degrees do not bring practical benefits to the spiritual life?
