Questions and Answers
April 20, 2011. 124-minute question-and-answer session with Thich Nhat Hanh on the fourth day of a five-day retreat in Taipei, Taiwan, offered in English with consecutive translation into Mandarin.
During the first eight minutes the English audio is difficult to hear; in this segment Thay Phap Dung, at Thich Nhat Hanh’s request, introduces several monastics—Phap Luu (Brother Stream), Sister Pine, Sister Purification (violinist), Sister Dang N., and Sister Lien N.—and these sweet introductions continue for about thirty minutes.
Thich Nhat Hanh then invites retreatants to ask “questions of the heart,” questions about suffering and happiness. Topics include: being present for those around us through touching the earth; meditating on sad or negative emotions; whether there are already enough different Buddhist groups in Taiwan; practicing the fourth mantra, “Please help,” and learning to ask for help; an adopted child searching for a sense of ancestors and parents; working with suffering in a lesbian relationship; and the relationship between happiness and sadness.
The recording alternates between English and Mandarin as Thay responds to each question.
