Samaddhi Discourse 2
The Samiddhi Sutra teaches that the Dharma addresses the present moment, transcending time to bring nourishment, healing, and the transformation of suffering. Understanding the true nature of desire prevents the desiring mind from arising, allowing one to remain free and dwell in the wonders of life.
Operating on the ground of self causes suffering through three complexes that must be ended:
- The complex of superiority
- The complex of inferiority
- The complex of equality
All three complexes are based on the notion of self. True equanimity requires the wisdom of non-discrimination, or nirvikalpa-jñāna, where the distinction between self and other is transcended. Taking care of oneself is taking care of the Sangha, and taking care of the Sangha is taking care of oneself. Just as the right hand naturally helps the left hand without a sense of superiority, all achievements within the community are collective products rather than individual creations, freeing us from pride and suffering.
