Sowing Seeds of Peace, Transforming Suffering
In the upcoming winter retreat, we will have the opportunity to dwell in one place for three months to “plow and sow” on the field of body and mind. Body and mind are the soil, meditation practice is the plowing, and the teachings of the Dharma are the seeds. Thanks to skillful organization, both monastics and lay practitioners will share in the work, and the retreat will bring happiness to both the practitioners and the larger Sangha.
The practice has two main aspects:
-
Nourishing body and mind each day with joy and happiness in the present moment through three elements:
- Right Speech (nourishing words)
- Right Thinking (thoughts that bring nourishment)
- Right Action (actions that bring joy)
- Recognizing, embracing, and transforming the suffering within us without needing to change our circumstances or other people—“the only way out is in.”
Every moment—eating, brushing our teeth, urinating, defecating, cooking, washing dishes—can be a Dharma door of practice when we dwell in the present moment and remember the suffering of the past in order to recognize happiness right here and now.
