Subject and Object - Perception and Form
The details of this talk focus on the winter retreat at Lower Hamlet, Cam Lo Temple, where everyone reads the second chapter of the Mahayana Nirvana Sutra. In the passage, Thich Nhat Hanh explains that all images are merely manifestations of the mind, and that the mind cannot grasp any absolute dharma. When the mind arises, images also arise and manifest just like looking into a mirror. He emphasizes that the external world is only a manifestation of consciousness and that there is no true realm. In French, Bhagavata responds that the images are not different from consciousness. He also teaches that everything reflects from consciousness and that perception requires the interaction between the subject and the object of perception. He continuously emphasizes that everything exists in a simultaneous space and cannot be separated. He uses many illustrative examples such as looking into a mirror, filming, and footprints in the snow to explain that all are manifestations of consciousness. He also discusses the continuous change of human beings and that each new version of a person reflects the previous version. He concludes that everything originates from consciousness and that we need to seek liberation through a spirit of non-grasping.
