Sutra on the Full Awareness of Breathing & Three Doors of Liberation
October 25, 2012. A 105-minute Dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh in Lower Hamlet, Plum Village, during the Autumn Retreat on a Day of Mindfulness.
The teaching revisits the Four Kinds of Nutriments and their relationship to the Fifth Mindfulness Training. It explores power, the mind of love, enlightenment, and bodhicitta—energy arising from mindfulness and concentration. Understanding your own suffering helps you understand the suffering of others in the family and in the nation; understanding is the foundation of love. When the mind is left uncultivated it brings suffering, so a spiritual dimension in daily life is essential.
Thay looks into mental formations that make us suffer and how they can be transformed, the role of samadhi in maintaining awareness, and meditation on impermanence to treasure the moments we have. He presents the Three Doors of Liberation—emptiness, signlessness, aimlessness—offering an exploration of birth and death, being and non-being, impermanence, non-craving, and nirvana.
