Taking Refuge in the Island of Self
This talk details a story for those who are nine or twelve years old about climbing a mountain at twelve with schoolmates and teachers, forming groups of five and packing rice, sesame seed salt, and water. Thich Nhat Hanh admired hermits like Buddha and hoped to meet one. At nine, he saw a drawing of Buddha, inspiring a seed of peace and relaxation. Upon reaching an empty hermitage, he discovered a pristine natural well, feeling profound contentment and peace. The well symbolizes meeting Buddha or Jesus, embodying mindfulness and spiritual presence. Taking Refuge in the Island of Self involves mindful breathing, walking meditation, and embracing Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha within oneself. Cultivating mindfulness nurtures positive qualities and transforms negative emotions like anger. Surrounding oneself with positivity and practicing mindfulness daily fosters peace and joy. Recognizing interconnectedness and nurturing consciousness with mindful practices are essential for well-being.
