The Ceremony of Facing Each Other at the Rains Retreat

We vow to enter the three-month winter retreat of 2001–2002 at Plum Village (Upper Hamlet, Lower Hamlet, New Hamlet), wholeheartedly taking refuge in the Sangha, Teacher, elder nuns, and sisters in order to practice with three aspirations:

  1. Purification of body and mind
  2. Transformation of afflictions
  3. Cultivation of the joy of the Dharma

The Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Shramanerikas, and lay men and women respectfully state their Dharma names, sincerely paying homage to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Patriarchs, as well as the Most Venerable Teacher, elder monks, elder nuns, and sisters, to request their witness and support as a refuge. Each person also vows to diligently practice, to be a solid support for one another, to maintain brotherhood and deep joy within the Sangha.
