The Essential Sutra Chanting for Wonderful Peace 1
The Asian Institute of Applied Buddhism in Hong Kong will begin operating in the coming months with about 30 resident monastics, expected to increase to 125 after one year. The Institute trains both monastic and lay Dharma teachers to serve Asia, and also invites them to Europe and America for support. In Europe, there is the European Institute of Applied Buddhism in Germany (Plum Village is a branch institute), and in America, there are Deer Park and Blue Cliff Monasteries. Starting this year, the Institute will collaborate with Buddhist universities to offer supplementary practice retreats lasting one to two months, providing certificates and credits in applied practice, helping doctoral students in Buddhist studies to connect theory with practice.
Mindfulness is the heart of the practice, and is one of the 51 mental formations, among which there are five universal mental formations always present in daily life:
- contact – the touch between the six sense organs and the six sense objects
- attention – the act of noticing, focusing, including appropriate attention (Yonisomanaskāra)
- feeling – sensations or feelings
- perception – perception, recognition

volition – the will to act
Practice through internal questions such as “Are you truly there?”, “Are you solid?”, “Are you at ease?” combined with mindful breathing and walking, nourishes joy, happiness, and lightness, helping to generate mindfulness, concentration, and insight in order to transform old mental pathways, to live deeply, peacefully, and to support each other in the Sangha.
