Pascal, 36 years old, suffering from mental illness and nearly blind, was embraced in the love and understanding of the sangha during the French retreat at Plum Village. On his way home, he radiated so much happiness that even strangers could feel his joy, and for the first time, he spoke about his childhood when he was abandoned by his mother. He revealed his deep pain, began to call his mother, and, accompanied by his uncle Roland Josima, was able to let go of hatred thanks to mindfulness and love.

This retreat had more than 150 people taking refuge, with many absent practitioners silently practicing as well. A group of soldiers requested to attend even though all places were filled. The Parallax Press Prison Project Committee sent 50 copies of Be Free Where You Are to inmates in more than 70 prisons in 21 states across the United States, including Supermax and death row facilities, helping them to transform the wonders of their practice.

The practice of the practice notebook is the foundation for daily mindfulness: carrying a notebook and pen to sitting meditation, recording walking meditation, feelings, and actions. Understanding the five skandhas helps us to recognize and let go of suffering:

  3. perceptions
  4. mental formations
  5. consciousness
