The Insight of No-Self
The first breath at birth happens in chaos, and only the fierce will to live is steadfast. It is the act of breathing in and knowing that we are breathing in that brings about full presence in this very moment; each breath is a moment of being reborn. The practice of mindful breathing—breathing in, knowing that we are breathing in; breathing out, knowing that we are breathing out—is the foundation of the spiritual life and a miracle transmitted from teacher, elder brother or sister, or fellow practitioner. Thanks to mindfulness, we cherish each breath, remember the moment of being born again, and understand that even those with great wealth and power cannot hold on to their last breath.
Practice is not only an individual journey but also a connection with our ancestors and the Sangha. When we breathe with the awareness of non-self, we allow our ancestors to come alive in us and radiate the light of a life much greater than any worldly power. The practice of non-self is expressed in simple actions—bowing, walking, eating, sweeping the floor, washing the dishes—and in walking meditation with our ancestors. Recognizing, embracing, and transforming the suffering of our ancestors with the insight of non-self and the Four Immeasurable Minds is a truer form of filial piety than any external offering. The Sangha is the condition that helps each person manifest the hidden talents handed down by our ancestors, together building a community of practice—a river flowing in harmony—to lessen the suffering of life and increase our collective happiness.
