The Meaning of the Gatha on the Transmission of the Lamp
The details of this Dharma Talk encompass many profound topics shared by Thich Nhat Hanh. He spoke about the three-month retreat at Phap Van Monastery, where the last day of the retreat is called “the Buddha’s joyful day.” He recalled the transmission gatha given to Sister Dinh Nghiem, symbolizing the dignified practice and the connection between earth and sky. He emphasized that humans contain both animalistic and Buddha nature, and the harmony between them is necessary to achieve peace. He explained that in Buddhism, good and evil inter-are and co-arise like flowers and compost. He encouraged recognizing and transforming the negative aspects of oneself to attain tranquility. He also discussed the responsibility of building a strong community (sangha), where each person contributes elements of stability and joy. He stressed that building a community is the most noble task, and each person needs to learn to live harmoniously like a river or a beehive. He concluded that building a community is the answer for the 21st century, where every young person needs a stable and harmonious refuge.
