This talk focuses on explaining the deep-rooted causes of suffering, which not only stem from desire but also from wrong views, wrong thinking, wrong speech, and wrong livelihood. The Buddha meticulously prepared before spreading the Dharma, particularly emphasizing that the correct path is the Noble Eightfold Path, consisting of eight right practices leading to the cessation of suffering. Thich Nhat Hanh introduces “Engaged Buddhism,” applying Buddhist theory to daily life, and organizes retreats specifically for various groups such as businesspeople, police officers, lawyers, teachers, and prisoners to reduce stress and transform suffering. He emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and recognizing negative emotions to avoid falling into deeper negative psychological states. A fundamental method is simply recognizing all thoughts and negative emotions, looking deeply into their origins to avoid being influenced by wrong views and wrong thinking. He also mentions the example of the “second arrow” to explain that properly handling the initial problem prevents additional suffering.
