While chanting the Auspicious Verses (in English) and invoking Avalokiteshvara (in Sanskrit), follow your breath and relax deeply so that the energy of the Three Jewels can penetrate and embrace the suffering within yourself and your distant loved ones. You may recite their names to send energy of peace and happiness. May all realms and wandering souls dwell in the land of purity, sit upon the lotus throne, complete the stages of the Bodhisattva path, under the full moonlight of the World-Honored One.

In the monastic Sangha of Plum Village, there are five members who were formerly medical doctors:

  1. Brother Chân Pháp Bảo
  2. Brother Chân Pháp Hộ
  3. Brother Pháp Liệu (cardiologist)
  4. Sister Chân Đẳng Nghiêm
  5. Sister Chân Tế Nghiêm

Brother Pháp Liệu shared about declining his uncle’s advice to become a cardiologist in order to ordain, pointing out the difference between healing the body (medicine) and healing the root of fear (meditation, practicing the Five Mindfulness Trainings), which brings peace and happiness to body and mind. The Dharma talk then focuses on mindful breathing—being aware of the in-breath and out-breath, breathing deeply, slowly, healthily, and lightly—to calm the body and mind, and to dwell happily in the present moment (Hiện Pháp Lạc Trú), through practices such as sitting meditation, walking meditation, deep relaxation, Buddha-mindfulness samadhi, and insight to transcend attachments.
