The Three Realms of Desire
100% of the monastics participated in the election of Dharma teachers with a revolutionary method: monks nominated nuns, and conversely, nuns nominated monks; even novice monks had the right to vote. Each monk, when voting for a nun, had one vote; when voting for a monk, three votes. Each nun, when voting for a monk, also had one vote; when voting for a nun, three votes. Those who had lived together for at least six months could have up to six votes; those from other temples had only one vote. Men voting for men had three votes, voting for women one vote (and vice versa for women). The Sangha elected eight Dharma teachers: Giải Nghiêm, Bảo Nghiêm, Pháp Niệm, Pháp Dụng, Pháp Thành, Như Quang, Pháp Trú, and Viên Nghiệp; within five days, they composed and submitted their insight verses.
Food, according to the Buddha, consists of the four kinds of nutriments that nourish body and mind:
- Edible food – food taken in through the mouth
- Sense impression – food received through the six sense organs and consciousness
- Volition – deep desires, cravings, and resentments
-
Consciousness – Alaya, food for body and mind, the source of seeds for the six consciousnesses
Alaya (store consciousness) is the foundation that maintains both the unsettled mind and the defiled settled mind, explaining rebirth in the three realms: the realm of desire, the realm of form, and the formless realm.
