The World We Are
Thầy explores the “emptiness of giving,” illustrating the interdependence, interconnection, and interbeing of all things. Using the example of winter walking meditation, Thay describes how oak leaves become the topsoil that nourishes the trees to produce new leaves in the spring. He teaches that a seed of corn is the parent of the plant, and the plant is the continuation of the seed. Applying this to human life, he explains the relationship between the giver (parents), the receiver (the child), and the gift (life itself).
Thầy explains that the giver is always in the gift and that, with enough concentration and mindfulness, we gain the insight that the receiver is also in the gift. He notes: “This is what meditation practitioners can find out because they have the time to sit down and to look deeply. They are not too busy”.
Continuing the teaching on the emptiness of giving, Thầy shares that each of us is simultaneously the gift, the receiver, and the giver of life. When we produce thoughts of understanding, compassion, love, forgiveness, or joy, we are giving life. These energies of thought, speech, and action not only manifest as our future body and mind but also as our environment. As Thầy teaches, “You are your environment. You come from the environment, you are going back to your environment, you are your environment, exactly like the oak leaf”.
Thầy concludes with a call for a New Year’s resolution to save ourselves and the planet, “because we are the planet.” He offers many concrete practices for protecting the environment and preserving the Earth.
This talk was offered during the Christmas and New Year Retreat in the year 2008. Thầy offered this talk at the Lower Hamlet, Plum Village, France.
