The boat of the Three Jewels within us

The boat consists of two parts: the Dharma and the Sangha. The Dharma is Sandiṭṭhika—the method that is practical and visible in the present moment, helping us to return to the present, to touch and recognize:

  1. the conditions of happiness that are already present
  2. the seeds of suffering that need to be embraced, looked deeply into, and transformed
From there, we generate mindfulness, nourish happiness, and practice dwelling happily in the present moment—living peacefully right here and now.

The Sangha is the community, the second part of the boat, supporting us in two ways:

  • living alone (solitude ≠ loneliness): nourishing our inner life, practicing mindfulness in each moment
  • taking refuge in the Sangha: following the principle of “when one falls, another lifts,” joining together in walking meditation, eating, gardening… to offer and receive the energy of mindfulness
When we combine the Dharma and the Sangha, we are not alone, we do not drown in the river of confusion and the ocean of suffering.
