Touching Nirvana and God
On September 12, 2010, Thich Nhat Hanh gave a 113-minute dharma talk in Singapore during the Peaceful Mind, Open Heart Retreat at the Kong Meng San Pu Jue Zen Monastery. The talk, given in English, focused on the last eight exercises of the Discourse on the Full Awareness of Breathing (Anapanasati Sutta), which pertain to the mind (or mental formation) and the objects of mind. These exercises include becoming aware of the mind, making the mind happy, concentrating the mind, liberating the mind, observing the impermanent nature of all dharmas, observing the disappearance of desire, observing the no-birth, no-death nature of all phenomena, and observing letting go.
Thich Nhat Hanh discusses the fifteenth exercise in terms of nirvana, reflecting that it is the most wonderful exercise. He explains that by contemplating our true nature—no birth, no death, no coming, no going—we can understand nirvana, which he describes as the highest point in Buddhist teaching.
