Treatise on the Mahayana Path
The details of this Dharma Talk include many profound insights on Buddhist education and the significance of the Lamp Transmission ceremony. During the winter retreat at Phap Van Temple in Upper Hamlet, the Lamp Transmission ceremony for 6 or 7 new Dharma teachers will be held on the 5th, 6th, or 7th day of the Lunar New Year. Among the 9 Dharma teacher candidates nominated last year, only Thanh Son Temple and Bach Van submitted proposals. Thich Nhat Hanh shared that a Dharma teacher should not only convey book knowledge but also rely on personal experience. He took 10 years to fully understand enlightenment and emphasized that Buddhist education requires fairness and the principle of non-self. He also discussed deeply the meaning of meditative states and equality in Buddhist education. He explained that consciousness in the embryo is not thinking consciousness but store consciousness, called seed consciousness. He also shared that dedicating merit to the deceased through actions like releasing birds and fish is precious and valuable. He concluded that the rebirth consciousness contains all the seeds from previous lives and called it alaya vishnana, the foundation for the existence of psychological consciousness.
