Trust and Mindfulness, Energies of Healing
There are five sources of energy (ngũ lực) in Buddhism:
- faith (saddhā)
- diligence (viriya)
- mindfulness (sati)
- concentration (samādhi)
- wisdom, deep looking (paññā)
The first source of energy is faith. We need to believe in the capacity of the body to regenerate and to heal — to allow the wound to close, to offer relaxation and rest — and in the capacity of the mind to transform fear, anger, and despair through understanding and compassion.
The second source of energy is mindfulness. With each in-breath and out-breath, whether walking or sitting, mindfulness allows us to recognize the elements of healing — the fresh air, the earth, the sun, the sangha — and to stop fear in order to invite relaxation, peace, and joy.
