The three-month Rains Retreat with the theme “Buddhism Today, Buddhism Tomorrow” aims to learn how to skillfully apply the teachings in order to transform ourselves and society, to look back at the 2,500-year-old tradition and determine a path of practice suitable for the present and the future. The daily schedule includes:

  • Two Dharma talks in Vietnamese, one Dharma sharing, and one talk in English each week
  • Sitting meditation together every morning (except for one rest day), alternating three days at Upper Hamlet, three days at Lower Hamlet
  • Mindfulness bell chanting at each session in Vietnamese, English, and French (borrowing from another hamlet if needed)
  • Using two microphones: one for the bell inviter, one for the guiding teacher

At the same time, the writing and publication of collective articles through Lá Thư Làng Mai, The Mindfulness Bell, or Ici et Maintenant are organized in groups:

  1. Brothers and sisters from various backgrounds share their experiences of monastic life, daily life, and practice to help lay friends reduce suffering.
  2. Joint articles (in English, French, and Vietnamese) are translated and collectively signed, serving Dharma discussions and nurturing compassion in the community.

Building large organic vegetable gardens in Upper Hamlet and Lower Hamlet serves both to provide clean food and as a practice of mindfulness and to nourish brotherhood. The harmonious Sangha model is likened to a swarm of bees or a flock of birds: all daily activities—sitting meditation, walking meditation, chanting, gardening, washing dishes—are both means and ends, creating joy and connection, expressing the Bodhi mind and the ideal of the Sangha.
