Winter Retreat - The Record of Linji

The Record of Linji affirms that any kind of seeking—seeking the Buddha, seeking the Way, seeking the Patriarchs—becomes an obstacle, because as long as there is a mind that seeks, there is already failure. Outside and inside are just two notions of discrimination, so both of the following paths are mistaken if the mind of seeking remains:

  1. seeking outside
  2. turning inward to seek within

The key is to let go of all notions of seeking, to awaken and recognize the pure nature that is already present right here.

To live deeply in each moment, insight is present in everyday life. When we eat, drink, practice walking meditation, or brush our teeth with full mindfulness, we are not only in touch with the historical dimension but also touch the ultimate dimension, and the Pure Land, the unsurpassed enlightenment, is present right in this very moment. The Pure Land is not a distant place or a future promise, but the peace established by a practicing community—each step, each breath helps to adorn and radiate the energy of mindfulness and concentration.
