Wisdom is a Career

“Only wisdom is the true career” reminds us that the true career of a practitioner must be based on insight—the wisdom that leads to enlightenment, not just ordinary knowledge. No matter how vast knowledge may be, if it does not untie suffering, does not bring about freedom and peace, it is merely information, not insight. Enlightenment includes

  • Self-awakening
  • Awakening others
When these two aspects are complete, that is perfect enlightenment; only after saving oneself can one save others.

A true career is not fame, grand establishments, or high positions, but “helping the world”—bringing people from the shore of suffering to the shore of liberation and happiness. To do this:

  1. The guide must be someone who has himself “gone to the other shore” to be capable of steering the boat
  2. Practice giving guidance—opening up and showing others their suffering, its causes, and the path of liberation
  3. Maintain a steady mind, full of compassion and patience in the face of all the ups and downs of disciples and the sangha
  4. Expand the heart with insight to love, embrace, and walk together with everyone on the path of practice.
