Cultivating Peace and Compassion through Mindfulness and the Sangha

Thich Nhat Hanh · August 7, 1999 · Plum Village, France

The details of this discussion highlight the importance of cultivating understanding, compassion, and peace (Bhavana) as a farmer cultivates his plants. Knowledge alone is not sufficient for transformation; it must be accompanied by real practice, such as mastering one’s negative energies like anger through mindfulness and the support of a spiritual community (sangha). Taking refuge in the sangha means trust and commitment to its instructions. The practice of mindfulness allows one to manage anger without acting impulsively, thereby fostering inner peace and open communication. Calmly expressing one’s sufferings strengthens intimate bonds and fosters compassion. Using walking meditation and mindfulness with family and friends is essential for cultivating true love and mutual support, thus avoiding tragedies and cultivating peace and harmony.
