Dharma Talk a La Carte
August 24, 2010. A 100-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh in Upper Hamlet, Plum Village, during the Retreat for Young People with the theme “Truly Alive.” Thay introduces a “dharma talk à la carte,” inviting about ten questions and writing them on a white board; after twenty minutes, many more than ten questions appear. All the questions are linked, and answering one can answer them all.
The remaining hour explores peace, understanding, and compassion, emphasizing that even when we get what we think we need, we can still suffer. The central inquiry is how to understand our own suffering. This requires the art of listening—training in mindful living to listen deeply to the suffering within ourselves—because intention alone is not enough.
