Orientation: Peaceful Mind and Open Heart Retreat
Thầy introduces Applied Buddhism as a practical path to transform daily life into moments of healing and joy. Thầy details the art of listening to the bell, explaining how its sound acts as a live reminder to stop our talking and thinking, bring our mind home to our body, and touch the present moment. He outlines how this collective practice allows every cell in our body, alongside our parents and ancestors within us, to relax and experience deep peace.
Thầy guides the Sangha in the practice of mindful walking, illustrating how combining our breath with our steps establishes true solidity and freedom. By matching our steps to our breathing, we stop running into the future and realize that the Pure Land of the Buddha and the Kingdom of God are fully available in the here and now.
Following Thầy’s opening address, Brother Pháp Hải and Sister Định Nghiêm present key instructions on maintaining noble silence, lining up mindfully for meals, chewing thoroughly, and transforming shared working meditation into a joyful community experience.
This is first talk in a series of three given during the Peaceful Mind and Open Heart retreat in the year 2010. Thầy offered this talk at the Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, Singapore.
