The Duy Lau Lac Vuong Sutra emphasizes the transformation of violence, hatred, and fear through mindfulness, especially by contemplating feelings according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness:

  • mindfulness of the body – awareness of our physical form
  • mindfulness of feelings – awareness of our feelings
  • mindfulness of the mind
  • mindfulness of objects of mind

When walking from the residence to the meditation hall, with each step countless feelings arise, which may be pleasant or unpleasant. If we are fully present, correctly recognizing each feeling, our heart will no longer be pulled by the past into sorrow or swept away by fear of the future.

Mindfulness helps us distinguish between two kinds of pleasant feelings:

  1. wholesome – not giving rise to future suffering, which we can safely enjoy
  2. unwholesome – containing toxins, leading to agitation and regret, which we need to let go of with insight

When unpleasant feelings arise, simply asking why this feeling is present allows us to recognize its origin (past or future) and let it go, regaining our freedom and peace. Walking meditation – practicing throughout the day with each step – is the path of practice that brings joy, happiness, and powerful spiritual energy. In the great assembly, each sound of the bell creates Noble Silence, nourishing mindfulness and concentration for everyone, helping each step to shake the whole world, bringing us right into the Pure Land.
