Fourth Dharma Talk Omega Retreat
On the wisdom of non-discrimination, if you look deeply into your hand, you see your mother’s and father’s hand, your grandparents’ hands—ancestors alive within it. Right and left hands collaborate without thought of self or discrimination, revealing a seed of non-discrimination present in each of us.
Contemplating a young banana tree’s three leaves shows how the first leaf lives fully—enjoying sunshine and rain—yet continually nourishes the second, the third, and those yet to come. By following each leaf’s example—living with joy and meaning—we nurture future generations. In retreats for young people, the greatest gift parents can give is their own happiness: a harmonious, joyful life transmitted to their children.
Mindful living offers tools to transform suffering and restore peace:
- Peace Treaty—sit together, inquire “Darling, are we a happy couple? If not, why?” and promise not to repeat causes of suffering.
-
Two mantras for presence and recognition:
• “Darling, I am really here for you.”
• “Darling, I know you are there, and I am so happy.” - Hugging meditation—with mindful breathing and joined palms—embrace and breathe: “I know my beloved one is in my arms, alive… I feel so happy.”
- Six great elements as nutriments—earth, water, fire, air, space, consciousness—and four categories of feelings—pleasant, unpleasant, neutral, mixed—transformed into well-being by mindfulness.
- Compassionate listening and loving speech—being fully present to listen without blame and speak without judgment, reestablishing communication between parents and children, partners, and loved ones.
