This is the Dharma talk by Thay on 25 May 2013 during the Retreat at YMCA Hong Kong. The 87-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Hong Kong is part of the sangha’s spring Asian Tour. The theme of the retreat is “Happiness is the Way.”

To meditate is to have the time to look deeply. We first take the body as the object of our meditation, practicing mindfulness of the body. The talk reviews the realms of the exercises on breathing: Breath, Feelings, and Mind, with a focus on the mind. It starts with the concept of mental formations, discussing how to work with and identify them. Meditation involves sitting at the river of mental formations and recognizing each as they go by. The talk explores store consciousness and mind consciousness, emphasizing the importance of watering the good seeds in our consciousness and practicing selective watering and Right Diligence.

The talk also covers the ten exercises from the Sutra on the Full Awareness of Mindful Breathing, though only the first six are discussed in this session. It then shifts to the Fifth Mindfulness Training on consumption, using the Sutra on the Flesh of the Son to illustrate four kinds of Nutriments: edible food, sensory impressions, volition, and consciousness. The teaching of Interbeing is also addressed.
