Insight is Our Career
“Only wisdom is our career” means that the only true career of a practitioner is insight, not wealth, power, fame, or sensual pleasure. In the Sutra on the Eight Realizations of Great Beings, the Buddha emphasized that insight (prajña) leads to compassion, liberation, and happiness for oneself and for those around us.
The material world often regards a career as:
- wealth
- power
- fame
- sensual pleasure
But the career of enlightenment is the attainment of understanding through the practice of mindfulness and concentration, not through the accumulation of knowledge. A person who has the insight of non-self—a bodhisattva, a great being—is someone truly great, always free, without jealousy, extinguishing hatred, and bringing happiness to many people.
