Mindfulness - The Path to Liberation
Entering the Stream teaches the Four Foundations of Mindfulness—the four domains of contemplation: the body, feelings, perceptions, and mental formations—with mindfulness as the heart: mindfulness → concentration → insight → liberation. At Plum Village, mindfulness is brought into every simple activity: sitting, breathing, walking, eating, washing dishes… each action lights up the lamp of awareness, renewing our spiritual life in the present moment.
Practice is an offering: each breath, each step is “offered” to the Buddha, to our parents, to the sangha as a gift that generates happiness and love. By relying on the context of suffering to recognize the value of peace, each step—on grass, on gravel—becomes a “miracle” of healing; in contrast, forgetfulness causes our actions to lose their true quality.
The 90-day retreat is a wondrous opportunity to diligently practice mindfulness in every gesture: walking, standing, lying down, sitting, breathing, smiling, washing dishes, cooking, even urinating. Each evening, just 1–2 minutes to reflect on the quality of our steps, our breath, and our work, asking ourselves whether we are truly peaceful, happy, free, and contributing to the Three Jewels.
