Noble Silence and Mindful Nourishment: Walking Home to the Present
Learn to sit like a Buddha: upright, relaxed, smiling, as if on a lotus flower—light, peaceful, free. In Plum Village’s Dharma hall nearly a thousand people create Noble Silence, an alive, nourishing silence. A baby there receives two kinds of food at once:
- mother’s milk
- Noble Silence (Dharma milk)
Mindful breathing and walking bring us home to the present moment. In walking meditation, breathe in for two steps and out for three, saying “I have arrived. I am home.” This practice stops mental chatter and cultivates mindfulness and concentration (samādhi), leading to deep insight (vipassanā).
Suffering has roots in four kinds of nutriment:
- edible food
- sensory impression
- volition
- consciousness
By practicing mindful consumption (the fifth of the Five Mindfulness Trainings) and the rest of the Noble Eightfold Path, we learn to dwell happily in the present moment (dṛṣṭadharmasukhavihāra), transform suffering, and end ill-being.
