This is the questions and answers session offered by Thay for the Mindfulness Retreat for Educators, scheduled for 9:45am EST on Thursday, August 15th, 2013, at Brock University, Ste. Catherine’s, Ontario, Canada.

August 15, 2013. 102-minute dharma talk given by Thich Nhat Hanh from Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario during the 2013 Nourishing Great Togetherness teaching tour. This is the fourth dharma talk for the 6-day retreat with the theme Happy Teachers will Change the World. We begin with two chants from the monastics followed by a session of questions and answers.

Children asked about struggles Thay has had and how meditation and the bell helped him, feelings about a dream mentioned earlier in the week, if Thay would sing a song, and what made him want to become a zen master. Teens inquired about the difference between joy and happiness, transforming suffering caused by a father who doesn’t practice right view, how mindfulness helped Thay in his life, and bringing the practice to loved ones without forcing it, especially those with sexual misconduct or doing drugs. Adults asked about engaged Buddhism, the identification of shame as a wholesome formation in the list of 51 mental formations, hope, fear and anger in society, the future of the human race and the planet, balancing kindness/mindfulness for future generations with present people, ending toxic relationships and concerns about financial stability, and overcoming insurmountable suffering and continuing to live.

In this short teaching video from the free Plum Village App, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh explains Engaged Buddhism.
