Returning to Our Own Planet
The Little Prince asked about the reason for the thorns on the rose: they are not meaningless, but are “armor” that protects the flower from danger and preserves its beauty and life, just as each star in the sky has its own value. When we care for our inner world—our own planet—sitting meditation is a way to return to the island within, using “gardening tools” such as the breath, mindful steps, contemplation, looking deeply with compassion, and insight of non-self, helping us to listen and cultivate peace.
Suffering is not only an enemy but also a teacher:
- The First Noble Truth – suffering is a reality.
- The Second Noble Truth – the cause is attachment.
- The Third Noble Truth – letting go of attachment brings an end to suffering; it is not the complete absence of suffering, but not suffering over what is not worth suffering for.
- The Fourth Noble Truth – the path to end suffering is to practice dynamic mindfulness, live simply, and be content.
By deeply understanding the Four Noble Truths (the teaching of over 2,600 years), we can reduce 50–70% of the suffering we create ourselves, not run away from natural suffering, and nurture joy, great compassion, and great wisdom with each mindful step.
