A gentle and peaceful period before the summer retreat, with more than 1,500 people over four weeks, is beginning to be cherished as a time to live deeply with the silence at Plum Village. Upcoming international activities include a three-day retreat at Methodist Central Hall in London (though originally planned for five days), with each afternoon at 6:30 a 15-minute walking meditation to the park, the community divided into at least 10 groups led by monastics and lay practitioners, protected by the police, then sharing a meal together before returning to listen to the Dharma talk, which includes chanting, guided meditation, and sutra chanting, followed by 15–20 minutes to visit the display tables. On June 7, there will be a Dharma talk, retreat, and a Day of Mindfulness in Frankfurt before about 100,000 people, with the intention to practice walking meditation in the park to embody the spirit of mindful walking right away.

True love is always based on understanding; it cannot be just words, but must see the suffering and aspirations of the one we love. Anyone who forces another to do what they do not want is loving themselves more than loving the other person. The real enemies are the negative energies within each of us, and the three root enemies are clearly identified:

  • craving
  • anger
  • ignorance
When we recognize and transform these afflictions with mindfulness, each step we take enters the Pure Land—broad place—as in the Psalms, which is freedom and peace right in the present moment. Mindful walking, or walking meditation, is the path and the practice so that each breath, each step, becomes a living symbol of peace and love.
