Step by Step Entering the Dharma Realm of the Flower Ornament Sutra
When practicing walking meditation, many practitioners at first experience a feeling of “ghostliness” because of the slow, unusual silence of each step. A skillful method is to regard the walk as a small “flower fair” along the roadside, focusing on each blade of grass, each flower, to enjoy their miraculous beauty. From there, the feeling of restlessness naturally transforms into ease.
This world is truly the Flower Adornment World; each step brings us into the Dharma realm through the eyes of the Dharma. Every petal, every cell of body and mind is the Dharma body, containing all things according to the principle of interbeing: one is all, all is one, name and form are not separate.
The key lesson is to learn to embrace our suffering with the energy of mindfulness and compassion, to heal each cell, while at the same time recognizing the sangha as a living Buddha. Only then can we bring this insight into the world, offering wisdom to the issues of our time—from the transformation of the body to the laws about cloning—using the voice of the Dharma.
