The Fifth Mindfulness Training (The Meaning of Marriage)
In the Dharma Talk on July 24, 1994, at Lower Hamlet for children under 12, Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized the importance of inviting the bell in every Buddhist family. He encouraged each family to have a small bell and practice inviting the bell to maintain peace and happiness. He shared a story about a little girl using the bell to ease tension in her family, illustrating the power of the bell’s sound in creating calm. He also discussed the responsibility of passing down traditions and cultural values to the next generation, emphasizing that each person is a continuation of their ancestors and lineage. He warned about the danger of losing one’s roots and the consequences of individualism, while encouraging the practice of gratitude and respect towards parents, ancestors, and the environment. He concluded that preserving traditions and ethics is the foundation of family and community happiness.
