You say you want to go to heaven?
Listening to a Dharma talk is not about taking notes or accumulating intellectual knowledge. It is an opportunity to allow the Dharma rain to penetrate the store consciousness, where the seeds of understanding, awakening, compassion, and love reside. Listening with the intellect alone is like using a sheet of nylon to catch rain, preventing it from reaching the soil of consciousness. To transform and heal, one must empty oneself of existing notions and Buddhist knowledge, allowing the teachings to touch the seeds of awakening within.
Buddhism is practiced in every moment of daily life, whether brushing teeth, washing dishes, going to the toilet, or walking. Mindfulness is the energy that unites body and mind, allowing us to dwell firmly in the here and the now where happiness is possible. The Pure Land, or the Kingdom of God, is not a future destination but a reality available in the present moment. By walking mindfully and enjoying each step, we co-create and maintain this Pure Land.
The practice of walking meditation utilizes gathas such as I have arrived, I am home and I am solid, I am free to cultivate presence and stability. This practice embodies the two aspects of Buddhist meditation:
- Stopping (śamatha)
- Looking deeply (vipaśyanā)
Cultivating these aspects brings true freedom from regrets concerning the past, anxiety and fear concerning the future, and afflictions such as fear, anger, and jealousy. Walking on earth with this freedom is the true miracle.
